![]() ![]() To me, it looks like what I would imagine if you told me to think of a typical looking fantasy RPG. But from playing previous Daedalic Entertainment games, I was a bit disappointed that this game seemed very basic when it came to looking like a fantasy game. It isn’t a bad looking game by any means. I was a little disappointed by the visuals with Blackguards 2. I will say I was interested in the story during my time with Blackguards 2. There is enough to keep the player interested during the lengthy campaign, with plenty of side quests to keep you busy while also taking over towns. The idea of a very open type game with a rich story is a fantastic mix, and works well in Blackguards 2. I loved the idea of having all these different towns to take over, and seeing them fall one by one was very satisfying. This aspect of the game is the strongest mechanic in Blackguards 2. The three plan to conquer the lands of South Aventuria and take down Marwan, with Cassia taking over the throne from her husband.Īfter recruiting the three other heroes of the game, you gain access to a world map that shows different towns and settlements the player can conquer on their quest to take down Marwan. After Cassia escapes, she recruits the help of a dwarf named Naurim, a wizard named Zurbaran, and a gladiator named Takate. At the beginning of the game, Marwan has Cassia thrown into prison, which was dominated by spiders and skeletons. The main character in the game is Cassia, who is the wife of Marwan, the leader of Aventuria. It allows the player to train their characters into the type of fighters they want, and not what the game wants, which is a great trait to have in an RPG. The amount of different skills and talents your characters can learn is very impressive. ![]() Progression in the game feels buried under menus which makes it hard to figure out what you’re upgrading, and how often you are able to improve your party. ![]() The AI quickly covered that one spot I could travel through, and thanks to the continuously re-spawning AI, I didn’t gain any ground in over 10 turns. I had sprung a trap, and it reduced the hexagons I could access to one. There was one battle that ended in a stalemate, and forced me to restart. There were multiple times during the game when the AI felt unbeatable as the game continues to throw enemies at you. The AI in the combat scenarios also led to a lot of frustration. There are so many systems at play that you feel overwhelmed at times, at least to those with minimal SRPG experience. But at times the combat felt rather cumbersome, and confusing. I was rather impressed with the amount of options at the player’s disposal. Players can also set traps to stop enemies in their tracks. You can use these as attacks on enemies, or to help your party in combat. Your characters have access to many different weapons, including daggers, two-handed swords, axes, battle hammers, and more.Īlso available to the player is magic abilities. You can move a short distance and perform an action, or move a long distance and not do anything. The battle system in the game takes place on hexagon spaces, with your characters moving throughout the combat area determined by how many spaces they can move. While the combat is the main draw of the game, I found it frustrating at times. Each character has a limited range of movement, and multiple actions to perform on each turn. The combat in Blackguards 2 plays similar to other turn-based strategy games, with each character involved in the battle shown in which order the turns will take place. The game takes place in pretty much two different scenes: a town scene where you can upgrade your characters, purchase new equipment, and take on side quests, and the battle scene. But some poor game mechanics keeps Blackguards 2 from being a great RPG.īlackguards 2 is regarded as an SRPG, or strategy role-playing game. With a great concept and deep character customization, the game will appeal to those hardcore RPG players. But German developer Daedalic Entertainment has filled that void with Blackguards 2, the sequel to their successful fantasy RPG Blackguards. It is rare to find a fantasy RPG geared towards hardcore RPG players in the current video game climate. ![]()
